Privacy Policy

Last updated: 8 July 2026

KaiUnity ("we", "us") connects neighbours into small cooking pods so households can share home-cooked meals. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and how it's handled. It's written in plain language and applies to everyone who uses the KaiUnity website and dashboard.

1. Information we collect

When you create an account and use KaiUnity, we collect:

  • Account details: your email address and password (stored securely and encrypted by our authentication provider - we never see your password in plain text).
  • Household profile: your household/family name, number of adults and children, and any dietary requirements or allergies you choose to share with your pod.
  • Location: your suburb and city, if you choose to list your pod publicly on Find a Pod.
  • Photos: a profile photo if you upload one, and any photos you share to your pod's photo board.
  • Content you post: meal entries, recipes, ratings, favourites/likes, pod chat messages, and join request messages.
  • Usage information: basic technical data needed to run the site securely (e.g. login sessions).

2. Why we collect it

We use your information only to run KaiUnity's core features:

  • Creating and managing your account and pod memberships
  • Showing your pod members each other's dietary needs so meals are cooked safely
  • Letting other households find and request to join open pods near them
  • Powering pod chat, shared photos, meal history, and the community recipe library
  • Sending you account-related emails (e.g. confirming your signup, resetting your password, or letting you know someone has asked to join your pod)

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

3. Who can see your information

  • Your pod members can see your household name, dietary requirements, meal entries, photos you post, and chat messages within your shared pod.
  • The public (including people without an account) can see a pod's suburb/city, description, and meal basics only if the pod creator chooses to list it publicly on Find a Pod. Household-level dietary and chat information is never made public.
  • Other KaiUnity users can see recipes you choose to share in the community recipe library, along with your household name.

4. Service providers we use

We rely on trusted third parties to run KaiUnity, who process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments:

  • Supabase - hosts our database, authentication, and file storage (including uploaded photos).
  • Resend - delivers account and notification emails on our behalf.
  • Vercel - hosts the KaiUnity website and dashboard.

5. How long we keep your information

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you leave a pod, your household is removed from that pod's member list and dietary information is no longer visible to that pod. If you'd like your account and associated data deleted entirely, contact us using the details below and we'll action this within a reasonable timeframe.

6. Your rights

Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, request a correction if it's wrong, and request deletion of your account and data. To do any of this, email us at hello@kaiunity.co.nz.

7. Children's information

KaiUnity accounts are created by adults. We do record the number of children in a household (for portion planning) but we don't knowingly collect personal information directly from children.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as KaiUnity grows. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know via email or a notice on the site.
